| The Great Indian Railway Experience |
Experience the fascinating Indian Railways. It's a journey of a life time.
While making a railway reservation, it is mandatory to send your name, gender and passport details. Ensure that you are traveling in a first class air conditioned coach. Not all trains have this facility, but air conditioned sleeper coaches are available on all routes except for the Shatabdi express trains. There's always a mad rush for reservation for the railways, hence an early planning is highly advisable.
We recommend the following train rides. |

| Darjeeling Toy Train |
In 1999 UNESCO declared DHR as a World Heritage Site. A heritage site is one that is worthy of preservation and a legacy that is worth bequeathing to posterity. After the Austrian Alps, DHR is the second railway system in the world to be accorded the World Heritage status. It is not only a source of delight for the young and old, it also represents the engineering skills of the highest order. This 83 km. long section connects Darjeeling with the railhead at Siliguri. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is one of the engineering feats of the world. |

| The Nilgiri Mountain Railway |
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a 46 Km long and runs on 1000 mm gauge railway. It connects Mettupalayam to Ooty. The first section of the Nilgiri Railway up to Coonoor was completed in 1899 by the Nilgiri Railway Company and was extended to Ooty in 1903. This Nilgiri rail system is unique as it is the steepest one in Asia. It uses a unique `rack and pinion' rail system, a similar manner as a person climbing a ladder using his feet alternately. It is interesting to note that the engine pushes the train from behind when ascending the hills and is in front while going downhill so that the train does not run amuck. Another interesting thing associated with the Nilgiri Railway is that the youngest X class loco is over 50 years old and the oldest is 80 years old! |
